Dear friends of Santa Lucia Galerie der Gespräche,

 

we are delighted to announce the third solo exhibition of Max Frintrop's work at Santa Lucia.

Over the last six months, Frintrop has painted a significant number of new works for the exhibition, engaging in close artistic dialogue with Max Dax, who will also be conducting the public artist talk on the opening night.

For this exhibition, Frintrop has picked up loose threads from a decade ago when he experimented with darker colors and extremely heavy brushstrokes. Recalling the sound of a needle on sandpaper, he adopted a darker color palette and chose coarse jute instead of canvas to paint on. 'The natural ease with which whimsical and peculiar sounds harmonise and create contrasts and the apparent lightness, with which things can speak for themselves, has always been a guiding principle for me... Thus, the alla prima style of painting, like that of Velázquez, always remains in the paintings. Coarse jute — the cheapest fabric and the most difficult to prepare as a painting surface — is also a reference to a painting style that turns necessity into a virtue, creating warmth and a physical presence.'
